Christmas earthquake shakes; no damage reported

earthwuakexmasfrontA magnitude 5 earthquake shook the southern Mexican state of Guerrero on Christmas day.

There are, however, no immediate reports of casualties or damages.

According to the National Seismological Service (SSN Mexico), the earthquake was located 7 kilometers east of Acapulco, in Guerrero.

Two earthquakes were also reported off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, a magnitude 4.0 and a magnitude 4.3.

Monday’s temblor near the Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco was felt strongly and many people left their homes, while the quakes off the coast of Puerto Vallarta went largely unnoticed.

The head of the Ministry of the Interior, Miguel Ángel Osorio said on Twitter that the seismic alarm system had been activated in Mexico City; after the seismic alert was issued, the sounds on loudspeakers was heard throughout the capital.

When the alarm sounded, the citizens went out to the street although the volume of people are smaller than other occasions because many of them leave the city for a Christmas vacation.

It can be remembered that last September 9, a magnitude 8.1 quake hit Mexico which claimed the lives of 369 people including 228 in the capital city.
